Have you ever thought about learning a new language? We hadn’t until a couple of years ago when my buddy Bharat Bhise and I decided to take a 3-month tour down to Mexico. The reason for us making this trip was partly to have some fun, but we were also planning to do some research about a business idea.

Instead of going down there and just expecting everyone to speak to us in English, Bharat and I decided that we would first spend six months learning some Spanish through an intensive course. We have always liked the idea of speaking a new language but didn`t know how great it would be or how many benefits we would get becasue of speaking this language. We never cared much for school, but going back to learn a new language on our terms was something that we were super excited about, and we are so glad that we made this decision. If you are looking to learn something new, then here is precisely why a new language may very well be what you need to aim for.

Best Language

Important languages to learn are those that are commonly spoken in any area that you will spend a lot of time in or around. For many of you, this merely means learning another language that is common in your local area. Many people in this day and age may want to decide the best languages to learn in order to help them during the COVID 19 global pandemic. Deciding which is the best language to learn in that case, would depend on where the best treatments were available for COVID19 or where the countries are that are not so severely impacted by the current global pandemic. For you to decide which are the best languages for you to learn, look around and think about what you want to accomplish. These are the top languages to learn in 2024 according to Tomedes.

Brain Connections

Something which you may not be aware of is that when you learn a new language, your brain creates new connections and pathways, more than in case of learning any other subject. The brain has to reinvent itself when you learn a new language entirely, and this has a hugely beneficial result on your brain health. Brain health and agility may not mean much to you now, but when you get older, it will drastically help you in avoiding issues such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Honestly, we cannot tell you just how amazing it is to be in the country of someone who doesn’t speak the same language as you do by birth and being able to converse with them in their language. If it weren`t for your second language, it would be almost impossible for you to communicate with another human being, and that is remarkable. When you learn a new language, you are opening up a gateway that allows you to talk to someone who you would never have been able to before. Even after speaking Spanish for four years, this is still something that continually amazes us.

When you learn a new language, you are also opening up the doors to an entirely different culture or multiple cultures. For example, Mexico is different from Peru, Argentina, and Chile in terms of their culture. Still, becasue we can converse in their language, this gives us the key to open the lock to just about every single one of those cultures. Of course, you can learn about different cultures in your language by reading a book or watching a movie, but to truly understand people’s way of life and culture, you need to be able to speak their language.

Improving Vocabulary

For us, the magical moment in our Spanish-speaking was when we realized that we were actually thinking in Spanish. What this has done for us is not only opening up our eyes to different ways of speaking the Spanish language but also made us speak English in a far more refined style. There are words in Spanish which, when translated to English, represent archaic words which we never use, given that they are so commonly used in another language that has allowed us the chance to then use it in our language. The two do help each other in terms of speaking at a higher level.

From a practical point of view, being able to speak more than one language is something that employers will undoubtedly enjoy seeing, especially here in the US, where we have so many different communities right on our doorstep. You could tap into the French, Spanish or Farsi speaking community within a company thanks o your ability to speak their language. We know that many of these people also speak English, but businesses are always looking for ways to make the customer feel special, and being able to speak their language is an essential thing. Our language is our identity, and while we can learn a second language, we must always keep our mother tongue. Your ability to speak a second language will give you tremendous opportunities.

What language would you speak if you could?
