The Premier League continues to capture the imagination of football fans from around the world, but supporters and players also have one eye on the European Championships next year. Euro 2024 will take place in Germany next summer and, although the host nation will be a lot of people’s picks to win, it is England that are favourites to take home the trophy.
The Three Lions have become one of the best international teams in world football and confidence is high that the nation can win their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup.
Will Football Finally Come Home?
England now has a squad chock full of world-class players and, although they are still very youthful, they have picked up plenty of experience in the last few tournaments. Having finished runners-up in Euro 2020 and reached the quarter finals of World Cup 2022, The Three Lions are 3/1 favourites in the latest odds on Uefa Euro 2024 to win the trophy in Germany.
Gareth Southgate continues to do a fantastic job with the national team, consistently bringing through new in-form players to join the old reliables of the squad. His mix of youth and experience has gelled with ease and in Harry Kane and Trent Alexander-Arnold, they have two of the most in-form players in world football.
The Rivals For Euro 2024
France
Euro 2020 may have been a difficult experience for Les Bleus, but having reached the last two World Cup finals, it is surprising that they are not considered to be favourites for next year’s tournament. The 2018 World Cup winners went through the qualification stages for Euro 2024 with an unbeaten record and enjoyed a stunning 14-0 win over Gibraltar along the way.
Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezman will supply the experience amongst a talented young squad, and Didier Deschamps’ team are likely to be hard to beat in Germany next year.
Germany
The host nation have been going through a rocky time of late, but the Germans can never be written off in major tournaments, and with the home fans cheering them on, they are another team that will be tough to beat.
Playing on home soil has always been an advantage when it comes to the big tournaments in international football, and German fans are known for the raucous atmosphere that they can create in their stadiums. Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, and Joshua Kimmich will be the key men, and new boss, Julian Nagelsmann, has also uncovered a big goal-scoring threat in Dortmund forward, Niclas Fullkrug.
Portugal
Another nation that has a squad full of top-class players is Euro 2016 winners, Portugal. The Portuguese are going through a golden period in the nation’s footballing history, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo, and, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo all in the side. They certainly have a strong chance of landing another big trophy.
Ronaldo continues to score an abundance of goals in the Saudi Pro League, and Portugal’s greatest-ever goalscorer will be hoping to bow out of international football as a champion of Europe.
